Visit of my workshop

On Sundays, having carried the breakfast in the bed to my wife and to my daughter, I always spend time in the workshop to make some arrangements. This morning, I ended what I name my "gutters" which are used as arrangement to my paintings. These small wooden shelves are very practical to store my small production. ;-)

I'm a great fan of the Spanish painter Juan Sanchez-Cotan (1560-1627). He's especially known for its arrangements of fruits hung on a rope in its compositions. While working something similar this suspended grape skipped naturally into my work.

I'm always looking for original objects. I found this blue Egyptian vase in the store of Le Louvre museum in Paris. Knocked down, it makes an attractive pedestal for my tangerine and a very pleasant miniature.

During several months, I studied a lot the art of the Dutch great masters of the XVIIth century. I spent numerous weeks to finalize my small theater then I proceeded to a large number of experiments to learn to use this new tool.

Trying to work the light, as the colors or the depth, I wanted to create a small intimist and bright world which pays tribute at the same time in the symbolism of the Dutch great masters. At the same time, it was important for me that this new series corresponds to what I am confidentially, whether it is in correlation with my personality. A vast program... ;-)

With a falling light, this first realization belongs to the domain of the Vanities or "Vanitas". The Dutch great masters were often Protestant. Having no right to show their faith in their paintings, they attributed then a deep sense to every object to remind taking advantage in the daytime present (for still life) and remembering that one day we are going to die for the Vanities.

The apple symbol of the knowledge and love is completed here by the watch and the books which are strong symbols of the vanity as the candle or the skull.

I hope that this new realization will please you. It's for sale by auction on DPW. New paintings basing on the symbolism are already in progress in various sizes.

Every time, I shall give you the sense of the symbolism of the painting.

I'm always in search of new ideas for my still life. I like very much dashing into small experiments through small series. This one contains 3 pieces. Here is the 1st.

An attractive feminine body is used here as support in a harmonious and hilly way to the fruit. A kind of Eve's new version without vulgarity before she crunches the apple. ;-)
